The Science of Cellular Renewal

Cacao Flavanols. Endothelial Renewal.

Beneath the surface of cardiovascular health, your body keeps a reservoir of repair cells — endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). Peer-reviewed research shows cacao flavanols can mobilize them. This is the science behind the ritual.

The Shift

From passive maintenance to active cellular renewal.

Most cardiovascular nutrition focuses on what to protect against — inflammation, oxidation, plaque. The endothelial progenitor cell research points at something different: the body's own renewal machinery, and the dietary signals that activate it.

The Old Model
Slow the decline.

Antioxidants → lower oxidative stress → slow vascular aging. Damage-mitigation logic. Treat the cardiovascular system as something to preserve.

The Renewal Model
Mobilize the repair cells.

Cacao flavanols → epicatechin signaling → EPC mobilization → endothelial repair capacity restored. Renewal logic. The system rebuilds itself.

The Mechanism

How cacao flavanols signal the renewal cells.

Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are adult stem cells that live in bone marrow and circulate through the bloodstream. They home to sites of vascular damage and contribute to repair. Cacao flavanols — specifically (−)-epicatechin — are one of the dietary signals shown to mobilize them.

The Peer-Reviewed Study

The original EPC mobilization finding.

Published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, this study established that dietary cacao flavanols mobilize circulating angiogenic cells — essentially endothelial progenitor cells — in adults with coronary artery disease.

Flavanol-rich cocoa increased the number of functional circulating angiogenic cells in patients with coronary artery disease, and this mobilization was associated with improvements in endothelial function.

What This Means For You

Three windows the renewal pathway opens.

Endothelial progenitor cell mobilization is upstream of three measurable cardiovascular outcomes. Daily cacao flavanol intake at the CCV-3® dose targets all three.

Endothelial Repair Capacity

EPCs home to damaged vessel walls and integrate into endothelium. More circulating EPCs means more available repair capacity — the body's first responders to vascular stress.

Flow-Mediated Dilation

The gold-standard non-invasive measure of vascular function. Flavanol intake at the studied dose improves FMD in controlled trials — a direct readout of nitric oxide signaling and EPC activity.

Schroeter et al · PNAS 2006

Long-Run CV Outcome

The COSMOS trial — the largest cacao flavanol RCT to date — measured a 27% reduction in cardiovascular death over 3.6 years across 21,442 adults consuming the studied dose daily.

The Ritual

One scoop. Daily. The CCV-3® protocol.

The cellular renewal signaling research is built around daily intake. The plasma half-life of (−)-epicatechin is roughly two hours — there is no “storing” this signal. The CCV-3® protocol delivers the studied dose, every morning, every day.

Common Questions

FAQ — stem cells, heart health, and the ritual.

01What are endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), exactly?

EPCs are adult bone-marrow-derived stem cells that circulate in the bloodstream and contribute to vascular repair. They are not embryonic stem cells. They are the body's existing repair pool for the lining of blood vessels (the endothelium). Higher circulating EPC counts correlate with better cardiovascular outcomes in published research.

02How does this connect to heart health?

The endothelium — the inner lining of every blood vessel — is where cardiovascular disease begins and where it is repaired. EPC mobilization is one of the upstream signals of endothelial repair capacity. The COSMOS trial measured the long-run cardiovascular outcome from daily cacao flavanol intake: a 27% reduction in cardiovascular death over 3.6 years (Am J Clin Nutr, 2022).

03Is the studied dose what's in CCV-3®?

Yes. CCV-3® is standardized to 1,200mg cacao flavanols and 600mg (−)-epicatechin per scoop — delivered in the dose range used across peer-reviewed cacao-flavanol intervention trials, including the studies cited on this page. Each batch is third-party tested to spec.

04How long until I notice anything?

Subjective signals — steadier energy, sharper focus, warmer circulation — are typically reported by ritual users within 14–21 days. Measurable changes in flow-mediated dilation begin shifting at the 30–60 day window in controlled trials (Schroeter et al, PNAS 2006). The long-run cardiovascular benefit measured in COSMOS came from 3.6 years of consistent daily use.

05Are there interactions with medications?

Cacao flavanols at the studied dose are generally well-tolerated. If you take blood-pressure medication, blood thinners, or have a clinical condition affecting cardiovascular function, talk to your physician before starting any new daily nutrition protocol — cacao flavanols are physiologically active.

06Does the protocol contain caffeine?

Naturally, yes — about 12mg per serving (roughly 1/4 of a cup of coffee), inherent to whole cacao. Not added, not concentrated. Most ritual users report no jitters, no afternoon crash. Sensitive individuals may prefer to take it earlier in the morning.

07Why daily? Can I skip days?

The plasma half-life of (−)-epicatechin is approximately two hours. Cacao flavanols are not stored — the signaling effect requires regular intake. The COSMOS trial's cardiovascular benefit was measured under conditions of daily consistent intake. Skipping days breaks the signal.

08What about other studies and dosing?

Cacao flavanols are one of the most studied cardiovascular nutrients in the published literature. Key references on this page: Heiss et al, JACC 2010 (EPC mobilization).
